This website goes over the history of various Mario games as well as the different types of Mario games that exist today. This website has four different types of Mario games that are listed and described in greater detail below.
The most well-known type of Mario game is the platformers. Mario's earliest titles in the arcade and for the NES were platformers and Nintendo still releases amazing new Mario platformers to this day. Examples include: Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Odyssey.
The second type of Mario games is the party game. The first of appearence of games designed for parties goes back to the SNES and the release of Super Mario Kart in 1992. Since then, a number of Mario Kart and Mario Party games have been released. Exmples include: Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Party 1-10, and Super Mario Party.
The third type of Mario Games is the mario sports games. The first appearence of these games goes all the way back to the NES and the NES Open, released in 1987, that featured Mario characters. Mario sports games have never been in the spotlight but they are good games regardless. Examples include: NES Open, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Mario Super Strikers, Mario Superstar Baseball, and Mario and Sonic At The Olympic Games.
The fourth type of Mario Games is Mario Teaches Typing. Mario Teaches Typing was first released on 1992 for Windows and Macintosh and it is an educational game designed to teach children typing. The game wasn't developed by Nintendo but it received a sequel in 1997. Examples include: Mario Teaches Typing and Mario Teaches Typing 2.
One of the additional types of Mario Games is the Mario RPG's. There isn't much in this category to classify it as a major type, but these games are important regardless. Mario RPG's first appeared in 1996 with the release of Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars for the SNES. Examples include: Super Mario RPG, The Paper Mario Series, and the Mario and Luigi series.
Another additional type of Mario games is the Mario puzzle games. This type goes back to 1990 and the release of Dr. Mario for the NES and GameBoy. There are other mario puzzle series such as Mario picross. Examples include: Dr. Mario, Dr. Luigi, Mario Picross, and Wario Woods.
